About the Play
Based on Victor Hugo's 1831 novel of the same name, The Hunchback of Notre Dame centers around the story of Quasimodo, the belll-ringer in the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris. Archdeacon Claude Frollo, a pious man of the church, agrees to look after the child of his younger brother--that is, on the condition that the child is raised in the bell tower, hidden from eyes. This child, cruelly named Quasimodo ("half formed"), grows into a strong adult with disabilities including speech impediment, deafness, and developmental delays. However, the audience is able to see into his beautiful, trusting mind through the music and through the Greek chorus-like group of statues and gargoyles that narrate his inner thoughts.
