About the Play

Newsies the Musical is based not only on the 1992 musical film Newsies, but it pulls from the real life Newsboy Strike of 1899. Seventeen-year-old Jack Kelly leads a ragtag group of homeless newsboys to a rebellion when newspaper giant, Pulitzer, raises the price of papers for the newsies in order to turn a profit. With the help of his new friend Davey, the impassioned reporter Katherine, and a force of angry newsboys, jack organizes a strike against the Work newspaper and all the other child labor giants in the city. Continuously beaten down but refusing to give up, the newsies redefine revolution and bring us a tale of courage, family, and determination that would change the world.
