About the Play
"Once upon a time," Shrek the ogre's happy isolation in his swamp is interrupted by a gang of homeless fairy tale characters. The characters tell him they've been evicted by Lord Farquaad. Shrek sets off with his chatty companion, Donkey, to strike a deal with Lord Farquaad-but when Shrek and Farquaad meet, the leader strikes a deal of his own; he'll give the fairy-tale creatures their homes back if Shrek rescues Princess Fiona from the fiery keep of the dragon. Shrek begrudgingly agrees, and he and his not-so-welcome companion Donkey embark on a journey together to rescue the princess. But when they find her, they get more than they bargained for--who IS this strange, spunky, and appealing princess they've found? And what secret is she keeping?
